Luis Carlos Ortiz

April 14, 1955 — March 22, 2025

Luis Carlos Ortiz, age 69, passed away peacefully in his Chicago home on March 22, 2025. Born in Monterrey, Mexico on April 14, 1955, he was the eldest of seven siblings—four brothers and two sisters.

Luis was a man of many passions: an avid traveler, hiker, and runner who enjoyed keeping fit and staying active. He had a lifelong love for history and traveled widely to take in ancient sites, natural wonders, and iconic cities.

Whether exploring the streets of Paris, hiking the ruins of Peru, or wandering a flea market in Athens in search of hidden treasures, Luis approached life with curiosity and enthusiasm. Luis was also known for his animated storytelling—often with just the right touch of embellishment to keep everyone laughing.

He had a deeply generous spirit and believed in the joy of giving. A true gift-giver at heart, he delighted in offering thoughtful tokens from his travels—small gestures of kindness to make people happy.

Luis is survived by his children: Elizabeth (Andrew) Hancock, Daniel Ortiz, and Tanya (Abel) Fernandez. He was a proud and loving grandfather to Ben and Freya Hancock, and to Yiselle Sanchez, Yannis Fernandez, and Aaron Fernandez. He also leaves behind beloved family and friends in Monterrey, Chicago, San Antonio, and England.

Luis lived with a common-sense wisdom: work hard, do your best, and always be kind.
